A lovely vintage rug, a so called Swedish Röllakan. It's handwoven in the technique called ‘röllakan’, where the woolen yarn is laid in manually for a wonderfully sturdy, classic quality. The stability of the weave, along with the high quality materials selected, give the rugs their durability.
Röllakan rugs have been made in Sweden for centuries, taking on many different forms and functions over the course of time. Rugs woven in the traditional Oriental style were originally brought to Sweden as early as the early Middle Ages through trade routes dating back to the Modern period.
In the years that followed, these Swedish rug weavers began developing their own themes in line with the Swedish cultural heritage.
They were popular among the folk artists and used as bed coverings and wall hangings. Today these Röllakans are highly sought after is used as regular floor rugs as well.
This one comes in a nice neutral colour palette with typical earthy Scandinavian colours of browns and creams.
